Something you should know about me

Mmmmmm....raspberriesIf I ever go to your house, you should probably hide your raspberries. Otherwise I will eat them all. Even though I know it is rude to eat all your raspberries, I will not be able to stop until they are all gone.

Just so you know.

I’ll remember that. So, if you ever see raspberries at my house you may assume they are there for you to eat

  • Either that or you didn’t hide them well enough. 😉

Raspberries are soo good! Target sells under its “Archer Farms” brand a “Raspberry Real Fruit Syrup.” I consider my use of this syrup medicinal as it keeps me sane when I can’t get my hands on fresh raspberries.

I don’t think I’ve had fresh raspberries before, but I definitely vouch for the ultimate deliciousness of raspberry icecream with chocolate sprinkles or raspberry chocolate.

  • Hey Zoom; if you’re going to just eat ’em anyway, why not blame it on your doppelganger…?

  • Re…raspberry syrup? Do you put it on pancakes or just drink it straight?

Sam…you’ve NEVER had fresh raspberries? Really? I’ve never even heard of someone who had never had raspberries. If you were here, I would give you some of my raspberries.

Coyote, I only wish I were lucky enough to have a doppelganger. I am green with envy.

This is likely because you realize from picking as a child that raspberries are the queens of berries. They crush more easily so you have to handle them gently. You get paid more to pick each pint. And they are violently flavourful!

They are my favourites too because I was once the berry lady of Kinburn (a little like the egg lady on Margaret Laurnece’s novel, The Stone Angel.)

When strawberries are done, it’s time to pick raspberries! I’m up for it, there are places near hear- just tie some baskets around your waist and it’s easy. They freeze beautifully (if there are any left after the post-picking gorging) on a cookie sheet, then into a milk bag or whatever. You can blend them up for a coulis to pour over ice cream or whatever whenever…

  • For me they can’t be cold – it totally ruins them for me.

Room temperature, or better yet, warm from the sun. It is a summer ritual for me to stuff my face with them and just enjoy the whole mouth full of sun warm raspberries. Then crush them with my tongue – no teeth allowed.

So not only will I eat all the raspberries, I’m really rude and gross in the way I eat them!

  • Raspberries are also my favourite berry. At a seminar that I worked on this winter, the caterers used raspberries to garnish, and afterward everyone had had a fair shot, I went along and ate them all!

When I can’t get fresh ones, I buy those Europe’s Best frozen raspberries and let them thaw halfway. Yum!

(In defense of strawberries: they used to taste better. Now they are all from Chile or California and taste like water. And crunch! Strawberries shouldn’t crunch)

Also tasty: red currants. Though I have never seen them anywhere but my grandmother’s and mother’s yard.

I remember red currants from Opa’s yard on Lincoln…but raspberries are my favorite too. I was the queen picker in Kinburn…slave labour for Oma, only 10 cents a box

When I am not eating raspberries, I am giving raspberries

  • Fresh off the bush, still warm from the sun is perfect. We should all go on a raspberry-picking field trip together this summer. Wear long sleeves.

Heather, you’re right, strawberries aren’t as good as I remember them from my childhood, but if they’re coming from that far away, well, that explains it. We should all go on a very literal field trip this summer to pick local strawberries.

Deb – a nickle a pint for picking strawberries, a dime for raspberries. Not worth it, but not optional either. Red currants – yes, Opa had a big round red currant bush. I loved that thing. I think he might have had a gooseberry bush too.

Blackberries are good too, especially fresh off the bush.

Oh my goodness. It’s too bad you live so far away. I could easily share loads of berries. In my backyard is an ever-expanding raspberry patch. Raspberry season means raspberry pies. Just one pie requires about 6 or 7 cups of berries. A few years ago I baked 6 pies and froze berries and ate them fresh. I suppose I could make jam, too, but canning is such hot work it just doesn’t seem worthwhile.
And my neighbor has a considerable blackberry patch. I think the blackberry thorns are much worse than those of the raspberries.

Well you could be sensible and put the raspberry syrup on waffles and pancakes. But think warm brownies.

  • You’d never get any because I would have eaten them first. Love raspberries. *drool*
