I won 62 socks!

I won the grand prize in the MoxyMaüs draw! 62 socks! Every pair of socks in their collection! I’m celebrating my good fortune by having a little contest of my own.

MoxyMaüs is a local sock company. The socks are designed here in Ottawa, but  made in Turkey, which, apparently, is the Sock-Making Capital of the World.

My grandfather’s best friend owned a sock company in Montreal. I think it was called Bonnie Belle. Every year he would give my sister and me several pairs of socks for Christmas, but I didn’t appreciate them. As a little kid, I thought socks were just about the most boring gift imaginable.

But I’m not a little kid anymore, and MoxyMaüs socks are anything but boring!

GC bought two pairs for himself at Westfest a couple of years ago, but his son liked them so much he gave them to him. And I gave a pair to my brother for his birthday earlier this year. That’s how much these socks rock – they even make good presents.

A few years ago, GC and I went to see the local CBC radio celebrities perform their reading of A Christmas Carol. They were all dressed up to the nines, but what stuck in my mind is Michael Bardwaj’s green socks and how they added so much style and personality to his suit.

Even somebody like me, who doesn’t even attempt to do fashion, can get a major style boost from socks like these.

I’ve blogged before about how hard I am on my socks. I think it has something to do with the combination of walking a lot and having toenails made of diamonds. My socks tend to get holes in the toes within about three wearings. Even my shoes get holes in the toes.

There are two schools of thought here. One is that I should buy expensive socks because they’ll last longer. The other is that I should buy cheap socks, because I’m going to be throwing them out in a few weeks. I tend to subscribe to the second school of thought. I did buy more expensive socks once, and they lasted a bit longer than cheap socks, but not enough to justify the difference in price.

Anyway. When I found out that I was the grand prize winner of the MoxyMaüs contest, I was ecstatic, because I love new socks and this is one of those little luxuries I would never have bought for myself because of the aforementioned toenail problem.

So I trimmed my toenails and filed them down, and waited for the big box of socks to arrive.

I can’t yet speak to their durability since none of them have been worn more than once.  But I can say I love them and they’ve improved the quality of my life . They’re comfortable, fun and classy all at the same time, and whenever I look at my feet, I feel happy. I don’t think you can ask a whole lot more of socks than that.

Bottomless box of MoxyMaüs socksI’d like to share a little bit of my good fortune with you. Everybody who leaves a comment on this post before Monday October 15th will be entered into a random draw for a brand-new unopened pair of socks from my bottomless box of MoxyMaüs socks. The draw will take place on Monday, which is my birthday!

  • I just bought come cute striped socks to wear when I’m in the hospital doing my baby-having. I figured not a lot about that experience is going to be pretty, I might as well have cute feet.

I forwarded your post to Michael Bhardwaj, I think he will be tickled to be mentioned.

    :)

    • Jennifer, he might like to see that I blogged a photo of his socks back then. See here.

Good luck with the childbirth thing this weekend! (And the socks are a good idea. From your vantage point, you’ll be seeing a lot of your feet up in those stirrups. When I think back on giving birth, that’s the image that comes to mind.)

I love their socks. My daughter was really concerned when I brought home their brochure 2 yrs ago as I had her convinced that I was going to use it as my Xmas shopping for those that are close to me. i did consider it.

  • Gawd, pander to my weakness why doncha! I just went thru my sock drawer and threw away a slough of singletons — mates went MIA in the wash — and worn out ones that I don’t intend to darn. Does MoxyMaus sell in the USA?

  • What an awesome win! I just moved and in the process got rid of a bunch of mismatched or holey socks. I could for sure use more but as you said, it often feels like a luxury and I just get by with what I have,

  • Kathleen

The socks look great, how nice of you to share a pair with your friends. Happy early Birthday Zoom. Where can you buy these socks?

  • Man, those are adorable socks! I need to get back to knitting my own socks. Not only are they portable, fast and brainless, but you end up with rockin’ colours and designs.

  • DeLaina

Happy Birthday! And Im another prego looking for some great socks to keep me warm while birthing.

  • I was at a health fair at work, and when I took my shoes off to be weighed, both socks had holes in the toes. So I need a new pair! (And I just cut my toe nails too.)

  • Wow, I am so jealous! I love colourful socks and many of mine are in tatters now. Sign me up for your draw!

  • I love socks and those look awesome!

    It’s your birthday??

  • Eric Goodwin

Cool! I’d slay dragons for a pair. I didn’t know there was a sock maker in town. I’ll
    Check out their website!

Throwing my socks in the ring! Happy early birthday, pretty lady!

  • Jenny

How fun! I love socks. I don’t have any problems with diamond toenails or the like, but it’s still darn hard to justify expensive socks… maybe I should start wearing more skirts to show off the cute socks I do have. And, Happy (early) birthday!

  • molly

Oooo, colorful socks, sign me up! Happy almost birthday Zoom!!

(I live in the US, does that disqualify me?)

  • TK

How lucky to have won a stockpile of amazing socks! These are lovely. My favourite outfits are the ones that heavily feature my socks! Sign me up for your draw!
    Best wishes on your birthday.

  • Happy almost birthday!

Y’know, I’ve lived in Ottawa since pretty much just before I started following your blog (2007, I think), and socks would be an awesome excuse to accidentally run into the girl behind the writing. And, hey, if you’ve got ’em in purple that’d be awesome squared. My girl’s in love with purple.

  • Bonnie

Hurray for all your socks! And have a great birthday!!

  • That is AWESOME! Lucky you – congrats!

  • mosprott

Happy birthday, Zoom!! (Karma’s aligned alright!!)

  • megabytes

Happy early birthday! What a great present! I always love getting socks as presents, and giving them too. My daughter gave me a pair of bumblebee coloured socks for my birthday this year. They’re colours that she normally wears, but don’t show up in my laundry too often. So every time I wear them I think of her. I have all my fingers and toes crossed that I’ll win your most awesome sock contest. And by the way, I loooooove all the photos in this post.

  • mudmama

Nature Girl drooled all over their webpage whe we first found out you won. If l win she’ll get the pair -she has your nails too!

  • I want socks! Those are so adorable and charming. Happy birthday, Zoom!

  • Leanne

Those are some awesome-looking socks. I am trying to get out of my habit of only wearing black socks (or no socks). So a nice pair of pretty socks would be just the ticket :)

  • Mikatana

Congrats Zoom! Today was a sock day for me too. I wore some of my hand knit socks and got compliments all day long!

  • Cara

Nice socks! I’m green with envy.

  • Deb

I love all the different colours. Gonna look and see if I can find this company.

BTW, Uncle Felix’ company was Bonnie Doon Socks :)

  • sassy

Like the socks, can we enter the contest more than once? :)

    Advance Best Birthday Ever wishes.

  • So the answer to life, the universe and everything is now 62 rather than 42.

    Sock on, ma’am!

  • thatdarncat

    Happy Birthday!
I was just thinking yesterday that I need to knit some more socks. These are gorgeous. Sign me up!

  • I have a fondness for colorful socks. I have a drawer of handknit ones and I love to be dressed in my Business Clothes, all serious and professional and sit down and cross my legs and show off some brightly colored socks.

  • grace

What a generous way to celebrate your birthday. If I win you can tuck GC’s unfinished sock in the mail too 😉

  • future landfill

I have a pair of Moxy soxs – grey with the coloured diamonds down the sides. Rather sedate compared to the splendid array you have, but I do have a pair of purple argyles much like yours. I’ve always had a preference for argyles, some bland, and others fairly gaudy. I often feel that picking the right sox in the morning is the most important decision of the day.

  • Sid

Those are some seriously amazing socks. I think you’ve just helped me find Christmas gifts for my whole family this year – off to check out their catalogue.

  • I love their socks and received two pairs for Christmas last year – one pair from my husband and one from my mother. Oddly enough, they each chose the exact same pattern, just in slightly different colours.

Sadly, one pair was worn through (at the heels) after wearing them only 3 or 4 times. I was so disappointed but since the other pair has lasted longer, I hoped it was just a fluke.

  • Kathy

Happy birthday! If I win I’ll send them to Nature Girl!

  • Me me! I need some socks.

  • kim

I never knew they made LONG socks like that! I have read mudmama’s blog, and if I win I would love for Nature Girl to have them!

  • Jen G

Please enter my name in the draw… and happy birthday in advance! (and see ya tomorrow night!!!!!)

  • Stephanie

Those are cool socks. I always like it when I can show a little fun in my work clothes. They’re hidden until I cross my legs and people notice them :)

  • me

    Hi!
I would like to be in the draw, too, please. One of those snazzy pairs could cheer me up at work. I would think of my socks and the world would instantly be a better place. :)

  • Jessica

These socks are amazing! I would love to win a pair.

  • Julia C

Lucky you with all of your brand new socks! I grew up with 3 sisters. Up until I was the age of ten, or so, four of us shared a communal underwear drawer. Sometimes pickings were a little thin before washing day – socks that had no elastic left in them, underpants with no elastic either. Things were a little tight financially after my father died.
I now have a whole drawer to myself and more underwear than I will ever need! Counselling might be in order, but I am not going there.

  • Fancy socks. That is an awful lot of them.

  • […] And the winner is… Posted by Zoom! on October 15, 2012, at 5:49 pm | Thanks to everybody who entered my sock contest! […]
