I got a job!

I got a job! I start on Monday! I’ll be working four days a week for a non-profit housing organization I already know and like, with people I already know and like. It’s just for a few months, but it’s great for now. I’m excited, though a bit apprehensive because it’s been so long since I had a job. (Two and a half years…gulp.)

I dreamed last night that I requisitioned a radio at work, and when it arrived it turned out to be a robot who talked and made coffee and did all kinds of other stuff like vacuuming and collating files and backing up servers and unjamming printers. I said “But all I wanted was a basic radio,” and the robot said “This is what basic radios are like nowadays.”

I keep thinking about how my life will change, and I expect the biggest change will be that I’ll stop wasting so much time. I don’t know if this is true of everybody, but when I have too much time on my hands, I tend to fritter it away. The hours and days, and especially the weeks, they just crumble like dust in my unemployed hands. Not that I don’t like having all this time, but I haven’t been using it or appreciating it the way I would like. Having a job will fix that in no time at all.

Speaking of time, I’ve been thinking about how to change the birds’ schedule to accommodate working life. Currently, I get up around 7:30, and that’s when I open up the bird doors. They come out and play and socialize until 9:00 or so, when I make them their breakfast and put them back in their houses. Around lunchtime I let them out for awhile, and again from about 4:00 to 5:30. Then I make them their dinner and put them back in their houses for the night. Kazoo usually comes back out for a little while when GC gets here, because she’s in love with him. All the birds go to sleep when the sun goes down if it’s quiet enough.

Since they’ll be spending all day in their houses, I’ll have to make sure they have enough fresh toys in the rotation so they don’t get bored. And maybe I can figure out a way for music to come on for an hour every afternoon. They especially like Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, and other music with a lively beat, like the East Village Opera Company. Maybe I should get a TV and cable so they can watch wildlife documentaries during the days.

I figure they’ll need to get up earlier and go to bed later once I’m working, so they can come out and play before and after work. Hopefully they’ll nap more during the day, because adequate sleep is essential for parrots. If they don’t get it, they can develop problems like irritability and feather-plucking. The last thing I want is crabby naked parrots!
